Tips for first SUP journey

Tips for first SUP journey
Published 12/05/2020

We know you can't wait to try out your first SUP board. Once you have your gear, you want to head to the nearest water as soon as possible and hop on. We've noticed that beginners who haven't taken SUP lessons often have lots of questions about how to prepare their gear properly for their first paddle. That's why we're sharing tips to help keep your first outings safe and your preparation smooth.

Choose a public body of water

For your first paddle, we recommend choosing a public body of water where there may be other people on the shore and which is easy to reach if needed. You'll have plenty of time for adventures on remote waters later. If there is a body of water you know well, including the possible exit points, we recommend starting there.

Pay attention to other water users. It's best to choose places without heavy boat traffic. Larger vessels can create waves, making it harder to keep your balance on the SUP board and concentrate on paddling.

Plan your route and check the weather conditions

It's important to plan your route so that you have enough energy left to get back. Try to paddle into the wind at the start, so that it's easier to paddle back with the wind behind you.

Pack your gear

Before leaving home, check that you have everything you might need: not just your SUP board and paddle, but also a leash, a life jacket if needed, a waterproof case or dry bag for your phone, car keys and wallet, and a spare set of clothes.

Prepare your gear properly for paddling

Once you've planned where you'll paddle and packed everything you need, it's time to head to the spot and get ready. If you have an inflatable SUP board, find a flat surface and unpack it. After inflating it, or if you're using a hard board, don't forget to attach the leash to the board and adjust your paddle to the right length before you set off.

– Important! –

Before you start inflating an inflatable SUP board, make sure the valve is not pressed in. It should be in its highest position and spring back quickly when pressed down. Otherwise, all the air you pump in will escape as soon as you disconnect the pump, and you'll have to inflate the board all over again.

Inflate

The inflation process depends on the pump. But whichever pump you use, for your SUP board to glide nicely across the water, you should inflate it to at least 18-20 PSI.

Bring a friend and paddle safely

Although a SUP board lets you enjoy water sports on your own, it's recommended to paddle with a friend the first few times. That way you'll not only share great experiences, but also look out for each other's safety. In any case, before getting on the water, check: is the SUP board inflated to the right pressure; is the leash securely attached; and if you can't swim or are paddling in cool weather, is your PFD or life jacket securely fastened.

Pack everything you might need

The bungee straps at the front of your SUP board aren't there for nothing – use them. Take everything you might need (clothes, sunscreen, snacks, etc.). It's especially recommended to take a mobile phone with you on the water so you can call for help if needed, as well as drinking water. Accessory manufacturers offer a variety of phone cases and dry bags in different sizes, so you can pack all your bits and pieces and set off on your adventure.
